Install guide

Install Olio

About two minutes. Olio is free and comes straight from this site, so macOS asks you to allow it once.

You need a Mac with macOS 26 Tahoe or later, Apple silicon or Intel. Version 0.1.1 · 7.0 MB
  1. Step 1 of 6

    Download Olio

Get Olio.dmg from this page. Copies from anywhere else may not be the version I signed.

    Downloads
  2. Step 2 of 6

    Drag Olio into Applications

Open the file. In the window that appears, drag Olio onto the Applications folder. Then eject the Olio disk in Finder and delete the DMG.

  3. Step 3 of 6

    Open it, then click Done

Open Olio from Applications. The first time, macOS says “Olio” Not Opened, because Apple hasn’t checked it. Click Done, not Move to Trash.

    First launch
  4. Step 4 of 6

    Click Open Anyway

Open System Settings › Privacy & Security and scroll down to Security. Next to the message about Olio, click Open Anyway.

  5. Step 5 of 6

    Confirm it’s you

macOS asks for Touch ID or your Mac’s password. This is macOS asking, not Olio; Olio never sees it.

    Confirm
  6. Step 6 of 6

    Click Open Anyway again

One last check. Click Open Anyway and Olio opens. You won’t see any of this again on this Mac, and updates install without it.

Why this warning appears

Apple only skips it for apps from developers in its paid program, after Apple has scanned them. Olio is signed by me, but not yet by Apple, so macOS asks you to decide.

Nothing is wrong with your Mac or the app. Please don't turn off Gatekeeper to get around it; Open Anyway allows Olio and nothing else.

“Olio is damaged and can't be opened”?

Download it again from this page first. If macOS still says it's damaged, open Terminal and run:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Olio.app

Then open Olio again. Still stuck? Get in touch.

Updates

Olio checks for updates once a day and asks before installing. You can check any time with Olio › Check for Updates…. Updates install without the warning above.

Two things macOS may ask later

  • Open all in a new window. If you set Open all to use a new browser window, macOS asks once whether Olio may control your browser. Allow it, or keep “Current window”, which needs no permission.
  • Quick Capture shortcut. ⌥Space is also the default in some launchers, such as Alfred. If another app already holds it, Olio says so in Settings › General, and File › Quick Capture still works. Free ⌥Space in that app to use it from anywhere.

Moving to a new Mac

Migration Assistant brings Olio and its library across with the rest of your apps. To be extra safe, export first with File › Export Library…, and keep that folder until everything is where you expect it.

Uninstall

  1. Want to keep your things? File › Export Library… first.
  2. Quit Olio and drag it from Applications to the Trash.
  3. To delete your library too, remove ~/Library/Containers/com.andrei.Olio. This deletes your notes, images and backups for good.
